French ace happy fighting for his place

West Ham's summer signing Frederic Piquionne has no qualms battling it out with a host of strikers to start in the side. The former Portsmouth loanee sealed a £1million move to Upton Park earlier this month after following manager Avram Grant to the club. Piquionne has joined fellow striker Carlton Cole, Benni McCarthy and Zavon Hines while Loic Remy is also being linked. The French marksman believes competition is only good for the club as it will ensure everyone maintains high standards. Last season was a struggle for Piquionne at Pompey although he thinks West Ham are capable of a top ten finish this term.

Competition

"It's good for the club to have good players in the squad and competition," said Piquionne. "It depends how the manager wants to play - with one or two strikers - but I am training hard to be in the team. "Everything is very good here. I have been training two sessions a day for a week, and I am fit. "I think we have the team to compete in the top 10 and maybe win the Cup. It would be very nice. "When Avram called me to come and play for West Ham I said 'yes'."
