Alan Curbishley believes Matthew Upson's inclusion in the England side was fully deserved after a consistent season for West Ham.
Upson has been an ever-present in the West Ham side and his accomplished displays earned him a spot in England's starting XI on Wednesday night.
He was solid in central defence as England ran out 2-1 winners against Switzerland in Fabio Capello's first game in charge.
Curbishley is happy for Upson and believes he could prove difficult to dislodge from the team.
"I'm delighted for Matty. He's worked every so hard since he's been at the club," Curbishley told Sky Sports News.
"He came this time last year and got injured straight away, but he worked hard over the summer and has played every game.
"He has now got his just reward because he has been very consistent.
"He has got himself extremely fit and he is very professional on and off the pitch.
"He has been given the opportunity and will do his utmost to stay in there."
