Shrimpers bolster squad

Southend's promotion push has been bolstered with the signing of Alan McCormack.

Southend United's promotion push has been bolstered with the signing of Alan McCormack on loan.

The Preston North End midfielder has moved to the League Two outfit having found opportunities scarce at Deepdale.

McCormack, who last made a first team appearance in September, will go straight into Southend's squad for Saturday's trip to Cheltenham and could also figure in the LDV Vans Trophy final on April 10.

While McCormack's arrival is a welcome boost, the club have been rocked with the news of injury to influential defender Lewis Hunt.

The popular right back has suffered a tear of his cartilage and will be out for between six and eight weeks.

To compensate for the loss of Hunt, Southend have brought in 21-year-old West Ham United defender Darren Blewitt on loan.

Meanwhile, Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson is running the rule over another Hammers player in winger Sam Wright while midfielder Paul Benson is also appeared for the club's reserves this week.

Wright recently had a trial at League Two rivals Notts County while Benson comes to Southend from Essex-based non-leaguers White Ensign.
