Transfer news: Oguchi Onyewu weighing up options before future call

Oguchi Onyewu will continue to weigh up his options before making a decision on his future, with an extended stay at Sheffield Wednesday still possible.

The American defender is among those out of contract at Hillsborough to have been offered fresh terms.

Onyewu ended the 2013/14 campaign with Wednesday having penned a short-term deal in January.

That move allowed him to find regular football following frustrating spells at Malaga and Queens Park Rangers, but the 32-year-old admits to harbouring ambitions of playing at the very highest level.

It’s always a possibility that I will stay at Wednesday. But I want to weigh up my options before I make a final decision.

A man who spent time on loan at Newcastle United in 2007 said in the Sheffield Star: “Right now no decisions have been made, but I’m aiming to stay in the UK.

“It’s always a possibility that I will stay at Wednesday. But I want to weigh up my options before I make a final decision.

“Who knows, maybe I’ll have the opportunity to play for Newcastle again. You never know.”

Wednesday hope to convince Onyewu that staying put is the best option, with Stuart Gray pleased with the progress made by the centre-half despite his failure to earn a place in America’s World Cup squad.

He said: “We were disappointed for 'Guch' because he’s a good professional and a good lad. It’s how it goes.

“He wanted to come here and prove his fitness was up to scratch. I think he did that, but in the end the manager decided to go down a different route.

“I know he will be very disappointed he didn’t make the squad because he’s played in two World Cups.”
