Chris Powell found his Charlton side top of League One on Tuesday night, but suffered defeat to Preston in the Carling Cup.
Charlton lost their first game of the season to Phil Brown's Preston, and Powell was left to reflect on a night of mixed emotions.
"I'll take losing a cup game but going top of the league in the same night, but I'm disappointed that we're out," he said. "I wanted a cup run as we don't really have them at Charlton over the years.
"After beating a Championship side in the first round I'm disappointed with this defeat and for our undefeated run to be over, but we'll move on to Rochdale on Saturday now.
"It was a bit flat from them, and they needed a spark which came in the second half from Scott Wagstaff but it fizzled out and we didn't have our usual quality especially in the final third.
"John Sullivan made some good saves and I'm pleased that Leon Cort got 90 minutes but there's not too many positives when you lose 2-0."
