Notts County's bid to sign Paul Benson has collapsed after they failed to agree personal terms with the Charlton striker.

The Magpies held talks with Benson after agreeing a fee with their League One rivals and the 31-year-old attended their pre-season friendly against Wolves at Meadow Lane at the weekend. County chief executive Jim Rodwell confirmed via a statement on the club's official website: "We had a significant bid for Paul accepted towards the end of last week and he travelled up to Nottingham to discuss personal terms over the weekend. "Unfortunately we were unable to conclude a deal. We still have to work within strict financial parameters that could mean we miss out on potential targets, as in this case. "The chairman [Ray Trew] and manager [Martin Allen] worked tirelessly to try and entice Paul to us but unfortunately to no avail. "This summer has been one for rebuilding and the manager, in conjunction with the board of directors, will now focus on alternative targets that we have been working hard to bring to Meadow Lane."
