On-loan defender sidelined with knee injury

Gillingham's on-loan defender Matt Fry has been ruled out for up to six weeks after suffering a knee injury. The highly-rated 19-year-old sustained the injury towards the end of the 1-1 draw at Exeter on 28th December, prompting parent club West Ham to send him for scans which revealed a tear in his cartilage. His loan at Priestfield is due to expire shortly and Gills boss Mark Stimson may try to re-sign the youngster when he is fit again. "When we found out on New Year's Eve it was a massive blow," Stimson told the Kent Messenger. "Matt has been a pleasure to work with and he's put in some fantastic performances, especially for someone who is so young and had never before played a league game. "He's been a big player for us and he's going to be out for four to six weeks, and after that time we'll see where we go. He could come back on loan."
