Derby are hoping to beat Championship rivals Charlton to the signing of Darren Powell.

Defender expected to sign short-term deal

Derby are hoping to beat Championship rivals Charlton to the signing of Darren Powell. Powell is looking for a new club after leaving Southampton at the end of last season. The 32-year-old linked up with Charlton earlier this month and the Addicks were believed to be keen on signing him. However, Derby have swooped in and are hoping to sign the imposing central defender on a short-term deal until the end of December. Powell trained with Derby on Wednesday and Rams boss Paul Jewell has hinted the move could be extended until the end of the season if the former Crystal Palace impresses. "It's no secret that we need extra cover at the back and Darren fits the bill in terms of his knowledge of the game and is a strong personality," Jewell told the club's official website. "He would give us cover in the short-term and we can have a look at him while he can also have a look at us. "Darren is an old-fashioned defender who heads it and kicks it clear, and there is a lot to be said for that. "If he comes here and does well he could get himself a contract to the end of the season."
