Striker joins on loan after original deal fell through

James Walker has joined Southend United on loan from Charlton Athletic, just weeks after a permanent deal fell through. The striker had agreed a two-and-a-half year contract at Roots Hall in January after Southend's £200,000 bid was accepted. But the transfer was called off by the League One club on medical grounds after heart irregularities were detected. However, negotiations between the two clubs have now seen Walker link up with the Shrimpers on loan until the end of the season. There is also the option for the deal to become permanent in the summer after his heart condition was monitored. Walker did not play a first-team game for Charlton, but had been on loan at Yeovil Town prior to originally agreeing a move to Southend.
