Charlton boss Alan Pardew insists striker Luke Varney will continue to prove his quality throughout the season.
The £2.5million signing from Crewe was dropped from the starting line-up for Saturday's 1-0 win at Southampton after a poor recent display against QPR.
However, he made a match-winning impact off the substitutes' bench against Saints by creating the winning goal for Chris Iwelumo deep into injury time.
"He's come to London and stepped up a division," Pardew said.
"I thought his head went down a little bit against QPR, and what he did at the end of the Southampton match will get his head right back to where it should be, because he's a top player.
"That was a fantastic cross and a great goal."
