Steve Bruce has moved to deny speculation linking Birmingham with a move for Charlton's Amdy Faye, in the process reiterating his desire to keep hold of Stephen Clemence.

It has been reported that Bruce is eager to land Senegal international Faye, in a bid to bolster his engine room upon Birmingham's return to the Premier League.

Faye is thought to be keen on a return to the top flight, following Charlton's relegation, but Bruce is in the dark as to where these rumours have arisen.

"I don't know where that's come from," said Bruce to the Birmingham Mail. "It's not true."

It has also been widely speculated that Clemence, last season's captain towards the end of a promotion-winning campaign, could be heading in the opposite direction to The Valley.

The midfield schemer is thought to be disappointed about having not been offered fresh terms, upon Birmingham's promotion, but Bruce is loath to lose a player of considerable experience.

"Why would I want to let him go?" Bruce asked. "He was superb for us when he got back into the team, a real inspiration. He was my captain the back end of the season and won player and players' player-of-the-year awards.

"He's a big part of the plans for the coming season. He's never let us down and he knows what the Premier League's all about."

It is believed that Southampton are also monitoring Clemence's situation.
