Charlton skipper Luke Young faces a spell on the sidelines through injury.
Young picked up a knee injury in Saturday's 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.
The full-back has already been ruled out of Tuesday's Carling Cup quarter-final with Wycombe.
It is feared that Young could be sidelined for up to six weeks therefore ruling him out of the busy festive period.
The news is a major blow for Charlton as they look to climb their way out of trouble at the wrong end of the table and Addicks boss Les Reed admitted the defender would be a big miss.
"Luke is the captain, an England squad player. He has got a great reputation and is very influential with the players. So in terms of that he is going to be a big miss for us," said Reed.
"I have had a long chat with Luke this morning and hopefully he will be in and around the dressing room trying to gee the lads up.
"Nobody wants to get out of it more than he does."
