Iain Dowie has challenged Darren Ambrose to prove he merits a place in Charlton Athletic's team.

Ambrose's sole appearance in the past month came as a substitute in last week's Carling Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers.

He has been left out of Dowie's last three Premiership sides, with the Charlton boss urging the midfielder to show greater consistency.

Dowie has discussed the situation with the 22-year-old and has thrown down the gauntlet to the former Newcastle United player.

"I have spoken to Darren and what I said to him will remain between me and Darren," said Dowie.

"However, what we know Darren Ambrose is capable of producing, we have not seen.

"He knows he just needs to be a bit more reliable in terms of his final ball and his contribution to the team.

"But he is a talented lad and there should be room in any Premiership team for Darren Ambrose.

"Hopefully he will show that form sooner rather than later."
