Ian Dowie believes Charlton Athletic's new signing Simon Walton might surprise a few people in The Premiership next season.

The Addicks wrapped up the deal, which could rise as high as £1 million for Leeds, on Friday for the England Under-19 international.

Dowie believes the 18-year-old has immense talent and his aggression and determination will make him a great long-term asset for the Londoners.

While Walton only made a handful of appearances for The Whites last season Dowie has hinted the youngster could be thrown in at the deep end this term.

"Simon is a talented boy and he might surprise a few people," Dowie told the club's official website.

"He's very competitive, a very strong runner in terms of power and a great athlete who is very comfortable on the ball.

"We think he's a very good investment for the future, but looking at his attributes he's a lad capable of playing in The Premiership sooner rather than later as well."
