Darren Ambrose has expressed his disappointment at his debut dismissal.
Charlton midfielder Darren Ambrose has expressed his disappointment at the tackle that brought a premature end to his Addicks debut at The Stadium of Light on Saturday.
Ambrose's two-footed lunge at Sunderland defender Stephen Wright left referee Howard Webb with little option but to produce a red card.
The 22-year-old said: "I have to admit, it looked horrendous.
"Thankfully I didn't hurt the lad and he was able to complete the whole game because I wouldn't want someone to make that kind of tackle on me.
"Watching it again, I was really disappointed with myself because I am not that type of player.
"My only defence is the pictures made it appear to be a worse challenge than it really was.
"I just miscontrolled the ball and tried to get it back again but for that to happen on my debut was dreadfully upsetting."
After completing less than an hour in his first league match of the season, Ambrose was delighted to boost his playing time during England Under-21s' 1-0 win against Denmark on Tuesday
Ambrose, who scored the only goal of the game, added: "Getting the goal was a bonus really, I was just delighted to complete the second half because after what happened on Saturday I need all the football I can get."
Ambrose will now serve a three-match suspension and will not turn out for manager Alan Curbishley again before champions Chelsea's visit to The Valley on September 17.
