The 25-year-old is currently one of the leading scorers in the Ryman League with Bishops Stortford, having scored 32 goals already this season.
John will train with The Gulls for the next week in the hope of making the break into professional football.
The striker began his career with Wimbledon, before moving on to non-league outfits Romford, Dagenham & Redbridge and Grays Athletic.
Manager Roy McFarland (pictured) will assess John over the next seven days to decide whether he will be offered terms.
Meanwhile, Charlton striker Charlie McDonald has returned to The Valley after his loan spell expired.
"He's the kind of player I'd like to see more of but I wish him all the best with whatever he does in the future. He has clubs in higher divisions interested in him and he has to explore those possibilities," said McFarland.
"I will be keeping in contact with him, though, and if things don't work out elsewhere then I would love to see him back here. He's the kind of player that I believe we need at Torquay.
"As a manager I can't forget that in his final game for us he took a knock on the head but returned to the pitch to carry on playing."
