Ahead of this weekend's play-off finals, Peter Beagrie picks out his favourite moments from the enthralling race for promotion across the Sky Bet Football League...

As I have said time and time again, this season has been like no other. Never better, nor equalled, for the quality and excitement that has gripped the three tiers of the Football League.

Fortunately for us, the brilliant decision to extend the football season many years ago has meant the feast of football has continued through the play-offs.

While we draw breath, and before we look forward to the days of destiny for the clubs involved, I would like to reflect and applaud some brilliant performances by teams and individuals.

Middlesbrough’s third against Brentford in the Championship play-off semi-final. Albert Adomah’s fine finish almost took the roof off the Riverside Stadium; it was a truly outstanding team goal.

Aitor Karanka guided Middlesbrough into the Championship play-off final with a resounding 5-1 aggregate victory over Brentford.

It has to be Middlesbrough’s second leg performance against Brentford - it was masterful in every respect. They denied the opposition space and time on the ball while producing wave after wave of counter attacking football. Defence, midfield and attack worked in unison, switching the play in what was a truly nerveless display.

Best comeback (Bravery award)

Southend United beat Stevenage 3-1 in the second leg of their League Two play-off semi-final to seal a place at Wembley 4-2 on aggregate.

Southend’s Michael Timlin received 15 stitches after their first-leg clash with Stevenage’s Bira Dembele. Timlin played the whole 90 minutes of the return at Roots Hall – which Southend won 3-1 - and produced the marvellous extra-time dribble and finish to book his side’s place at Wembley.

It is an absolute privilege to go and witness the play-off finals this year. To the thousands and thousands of fans going to support their teams, regardless of the scoreline, make sure you get to and from Wembley safely.
