Nigel Clough is banking on Sheffield United being in the play-off places at the turn of the year before boosting his squad in January.

The Blades have been in and around the top six in recent weeks and climbed back up to fifth place following Saturday's win at derby rivals Doncaster, three points behind second-placed Swindon. "That's our aim by the end of the Christmas period, to be in the top six and then look to strengthen in January," Clough said. "We want to really kick on then in the second half of the season. "By Christmas the table has usually settled down, you've got a good idea. "Teams will come with late runs and everything, like we did last year, but generally speaking the top six should be established by then. "Then we have the chance in January to say 'this is year we are, now what do we need to take it on for the last four months?' "Then we can try and get a player or two."
