Skysports.com understands Sheffield United are lining up a swoop for Scunthorpe centre-half Rob Jones.
Championship strugglers the Blades have been hindered by their weakened defence this season after a series of injuries have decimated their backline, with influential stopper and skipper Chris Morgan among those on the casualty list.
Jones, who arrived at Glanford Park from Scottish Premier League outfit Hibernian in 2009, could help bolster United's defence if the South Yorkshire club are successful in bringing him to Bramall Lane on transfer deadline day.
The 31-year-old, a seasoned defender who has also spent time at Stockport and Macclesfield, has made 14 league appearances for the Iron this season, scoring one goal in the opening match of their campaign.
The Blades have been linked with a move for a new centre-half throughout this month's transfer window, with Leeds stopper Neil Collins also thought to be on their radar.
Manager Micky Adams will be keen to strengthen as United, currently just one place clear of the drop zone, gear up for a relegation battle this season.
