Kevin Blackwell is confident Chris Morgan has not suffered a serious knee injury, but is waiting to learn how long the Sheffield United defender will be absent.
Morgan was stretchered off during the first half of last weekend's FA Cup tie with Hull City after hurting his knee in the 1-1 draw.
There were fears the centre-half had seriously damaged ligaments, but scans have shown there is no major problem with the knee.
He is expected to miss the next few games for the Blades, with manager Blackwell awaiting a firm answer on when Morgan will be back in his plans.
"The actual structure of the joint is still intact which is good news," Blackwell told the Sheffield Star.
"In the circumstances, it's probably the best we could have hoped for.
"There is an awful lot of swelling which means there is obviously something wrong, so it's a case of waiting until that goes down before finding out exactly what the diagnosis is, what action we can take and how long Morgs is likely to be out for."
