Coventry midfielder Michael Doyle is set to miss the start of next season because of injury.
Doyle has been struggling with a hernia problem for some time and tests have shown the injury is worse than first feared.
The 26-year-old faces up to four months on the sidelines and will miss pre-season and the start of the 2008/09 campaign.
Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman admitted it was a major blow to lose the all-action midfielder for such a long period.
Damage"Because he played on (with the problem) it appears to have aggravated the injury and done more damage," Coleman told the club's official website.
"He carried on playing to help us through a difficult time and it's a great shame he will not be fit for the start of the new campaign.
"He's a very fit lad whose physical capacity is very good. He has a great engine and I imagine he'll be back as quickly as he possibly can be."
