Nigel Worthington has named Keith Gillespie in the Northern Ireland squad to face Sweden in the Euro 2008 qualifier.

Winger given chance despite Iceland incident

Nigel Worthington has named Keith Gillespie in the Northern Ireland squad to face Sweden in next Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifying match.

The 32-year-old Sheffield United winger's international career was in doubt after a fracas with team-mate George McCartney as they returned from last month's defeat to Iceland.

Gillespie was fined following the incident but has since apologised for his behaviour, and Worthington has insisted that it is now a thing of the past.

However, a hamstring injury that kept him out of his club's game against Bristol City at the weekend could yet end his chance of taking part in the game.

Glentoran striker Gary Hamilton is expected to replace Gillespie should he fail to prove his fitness before Friday.

McCartney, who was also fined for his part in the incident, joins Gillespie in the 19-man squad.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's Jonny Evans has been included but, like Gillespie, faces a late fitness test, while Luton midfielder Stephen Robinson gets a call-up despite not having represented his country since 2005.

Northern Ireland squad to face Sweden: Maik Taylor (Birmingham), Alan Mannus (Linfield), Michael McGovern (Celtic), Stephen Craigan (Motherwell), Tony Capaldi (Cardiff), George McCartney (West Ham), Aaron Hughes (Fulham), Jonny Evans (Manchester United), Gareth McAuley (Leicester), Keith Gillespie (Sheffield United), Steven Davis (Fulham), Sammy Clingan (Nottingham Forest), Grant McCann (Barnsley), Chris Brunt (West Brom), Stephen Robinson (Luton), Steve Jones (Burnley), David Healy (Fulham), Kyle Lafferty (Burnley), Ivan Sproule (Bristol City).
