Kenny out of Irish squad

Paddy Kenny has withdrawn from Republic of Ireland's squad to face Sweden.

Sheffield United have withdrawn Paddy Kenny from Republic of Ireland's squad to face Sweden.

Manager Neil Warnock did not want to risk Kenny, who is carrying a couple of knocks, ahead of Friday's crunch clash with lowly Crewe.

The Blades' quest for promotion has stuttered of late and Warnock is keen to have all of his players available for their Championship run-in.

"I had a chat with Steve [Staunton] and he has been very understanding," Warnock told the club's official website.

"Paddy has one or two knocks and although he loves representing Ireland I thought it would be better if he stayed here.

"We also have a game on Friday and it wouldn't have given us much time to prepare if he had gone.

"Republic of Ireland have another get together in May and he will be there."
