Defender James Vaughan has been allowed to leave Tranmere Rovers.

The former trainee had his contract cancelled by mutual consent in order to allow him to attend trials with other clubs.

Vaughan has struggled to make an impact at Prenton Park and his contribution has been limited to just six appearances for the club's reserve side.

Meanwhile, on-loan Sheffield United full back Simon Francis (pictured) says he would be happy to stay at Tranmere over Christmas.

"I am enjoying myself here and I feel as though I'm benefiting as a player," he told the Liverpool Echo.

"Getting some first-team experience was a reason for coming to Tranmere and the other players here have been tremendous in helping me settle in."
