United interest in Bennett

Birmingham goalkeeper Ian Bennett is wanted by Sheffield United and Leeds.

Birmingham goalkeeper Ian Bennett is wanted by Championship duo Sheffield United and Leeds United.

The 34-year-old custodian has revealed that he has spoken to both clubs but with an offer from his current employers on the table, is unsure as to what the future holds.

Bennett is keen for regular football but believes that it would be better to stay at St Andrews than play second fiddle in The Championship.

"I've spoken with Sheffield United and Leeds United but that's as far as it's gone," Bennett told the Birmingham Evening Mail.

"To be honest, with it being very quiet at the moment and people away on holiday, I don't imagine much happening for a few weeks yet.

"With me, I'll probably speak to the gaffer again and see what the situation is.

"He told me at the end of the season that if there wasn't anything out there, he'd welcome me back at Birmingham.

"The thing is, I've had enough of reserve football or sitting on the bench. I can't see Maik Taylor coming out of the team, and Nico Vaesen was preferred to me more often than not last season.

"It's a difficult one because on the other hand I don't want to be going into the First Division and competing for a place either.

"So would I be just as better off staying at Birmingham and going out on loan?''
