Watford have opted against signing Danny Cullip permanently and have also placed Jack Smith on the transfer list.

Cullip joined The Hornets in March on loan from Sheffield United as part of a swap deal involving Danny Webber and there was the option of a permanent arrangement.

But Watford manager Adrian Boothroyd, who was not involved in the original deal, has decided not to keep Cullip.

The centre half made four appearances for the Championship side but Boothroyd explained his reasons for sending Cullip back to Bramall Lane.

"Danny was just what we needed on deadline day until the end of the season," Boothroyd told the club's official website.

"I liked what he gave to the team and wish him well for next year but I will be looking for a slightly different type of player to take us into next season."

Boothroyd has also informed young defender Smith that he will not be required at Vicarage Road next season.

Smith came through the ranks with Watford and made eight appearances for the club this term.

He has 12 months remaining on his current contract but confirmed he has been informed that he can leave the club in the summer.

"It's a tricky time for me at the moment," said Smith.

"The club has told me I can leave so if I can get a move in the summer, they're happy for me to go.

"It's like being told you're not good enough, in a way. Once that's happened, it's probably best to look for something new."
