Tavernier wants Millers return

Newcastle loanee James Tavernier would be willing to return to Rotherham if the two clubs could thrash out a deal.

Tavernier was on loan at the Millers from November and played an integral part in their promotion to the Championship, including scoring a penalty in the play-off final shootout victory over Leyton Orient on Sunday. The 22-year-old, who made 31 appearances for Steve Evans' men, has a year remaining on his contract at Newcastle, where he has not played for the first team since January 2013, and could be tempted by a permanent deal at the New York Stadium. "I have got a year left at Newcastle," he said. "It's down to Rotherham and Newcastle to sort something out, but yeah, playing in the Championship week in, week out is appealing. "It's a great level and the club are going in the right direction, we'll just have to see what happens. "Over the summer I will have a conversation with Newcastle and see where we go from there. Obviously I have put a good set of performances in so I will see where that takes me. "It's the best loan spell I have had, it's the most I have ever played. "The gaffer told me to go and prove I could play every week and that's what I have done, he has showed faith in me. "It's the most I have played in a team and regular football has brought the best out of me. "It proves that the more games I have, the better I am going to become." Regardless of whether Tavernier will be in South Yorkshire next season he believes the Millers will perform well in the Championship and establish themselves as a second-tier club. "The club have got a great backing by the chairman and they will add quality in the right areas," he added. "They're on the up, back-to-back promotions just proves that they are progressive and they can go really far. I think they'll make a statement in the Championship next season. "Anything can happen, I believe Rotherham can really make themselves an established Championship team."
