Davis: Powell one of our best

Crewe manager Steve Davis believes Nick Powell could prove to be the finest product from the Railwaymen's famed academy.

Alex boss Davis collected the League Two Player of the Year award on Powell's behalf at the North West Football Awards on Monday night, an accolade given to the 18-year-old for his performances in the Railwaymen's promotion campaign before a £4million switch to Manchester United this summer., "He's probably one of our best," said Davis. "We haven't sold a player to Manchester United before. Dean Ashton would be very close I would have thought, (Danny) Murphy would be very close to that. "I just think potentially he's got that little bit more. In time I suppose that will only tell if he scores the goals and plays the games regularly for Manchester United." Powell signed off on his Crewe career with a spectacular opening goal in May's Wembley play-off triumph over Cheltenham. Davis added: "It was a great end to a great, long career in terms of coming through the academy. He changed the game for us in that early part of the game, settled everybody down with a moment of brilliance. It's a legacy that he's left with that goal - he got us promoted with it and obviously we got a lot of money for him."
