Gary Caldwell is aware that Wigan's shock victory at Anfield will count for little if they are unable to use it as a foundation on which to build further success.
The Latics secured a crucial 1-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday, with a rare goal from Caldwell seeing them to three much-needed points.
Roberto Martinez's side remain inside the Premier League drop zone despite picking up a notable scalp, but they are now just a point from safety.
Caldwell is hoping they can edge their way clear of trouble over the coming weeks, with it important that Wigan do not come crashing back down to earth when they play host to Stoke in their next top-flight fixture.
"We hope this victory could be a defining moment in our season, a first win against a team that is a member of the old Big Four," said the Scottish centre-half.
"It's a huge win for us as a club and it summed up the togetherness and the desire in the squad. It was a great performance and the work rate from all the lads was terrific.
"We've been playing like that for weeks and not got our rewards, but this time we got three points.
"But we mentioned in the dressing room that back-to-back wins are so important and we need to back this up against Stoke at home next week.
"This was a big result but it loses a lot of its significance if we can't build on it.
"We've had great wins before and then let ourselves down and we can't afford to do that again.
"So the hard work starts again on Monday. We need to retain that focus and turn in another performance like this one."
