Latics boss says his side fought 'like lions' at the Hawthorns

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez hailed his side's stoic defensive display as they moved out of the Premier League's bottom three with a crucial 2-1 win at West Brom. Defender Steven Reid's free-kick put the Baggies ahead but Victor Moses' first goal for 13 months brought the Latics level before half-time. And when Reid was adjudged to have fouled Moses, Gomez slotted his spot kick home to ensured back-to-back away wins for Athletic. And Martinez told Sky Sports: "I thought we defended really, really well. You could only see West Brom scoring from set-plays and corners but it was an outstanding free-kick from Reid and obviously from then on, I thought we showed some great composure. "We got on the ball and dictated the tempo and for an hour, we played really well. I was extremely proud in the manner which we kept the ball. "You can understand the anxiety in the last 10 minutes, but I'm happy with the way we dealt with the pressure West Brom put on us."

Terrific

The Spaniard was delighted with the display of Moses, who scored his first goal for the club since his effort against the same opponents over a year ago. He added: "Well, Victor has been performing really well for us this season. Sometimes as a forward and as a winger, you always want to see what you can do in the last third and I thought his play was terrific. "Every time he got on the ball, he had a real danger in his play and the first goal was outstanding. "And, as a team, we had to do everything today. We had to defend like lions and then we had to show our composure and flair and open the West Brom defence. I thought it was a complete performance and is something we need to kick on from."
