Wigan boss hits out at criticsm calling for Frenchman's head

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has hit out at the 'mad' criticism of Arsene Wenger this season. There were calls by some for the veteran Arsenal manager to be sacked after a poor start to the season, which included the 8-2 trashing by Manchester United at Old Trafford. But the Gunners have since gone a great run, claiming 16 points from the last six games to rise to seventh in the top-flight, as well as reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. Martinez, who has been under pressure himself this term with the Latics currently sitting second from bottom of the top flight, has nothing but the utmost respect for Wenger, who has managed the Gunners to three Premier League titles among many other accolades. He told The Sun: "Arsene is one of the best managers in the world. It sums up the times we live in that a man like him can be criticised - it makes you wonder if we've all gone mad. "With social networking, it's easy to express your opinion in public. But it made me wonder what's wrong with public opinion about football."

Great match

The Spanish tactician is looking forward to a great game between his side and the Gunners at the DW Stadium on Saturday with both teams needing the points at opposite ends of the table. He added: "Their philosophy is an example for teams everywhere. They are stylish, they have a strong work ethic, and the way they conduct themselves is fantastic. "We both need points for different reasons, and that will make for a great match. "You can try to beat Arsenal by being solid and trying to defend but it's a matter of time before they find a winning goal."
