Roberto Martinez hailed Wigan's "massive" 3-1 win over Blackpool as they climbed out of the bottom three.

"The performance from the players was very good. I don't think there has been a team that kept Blackpool as quiet as we have all season"

Quotes of the week

Hugo Rodallega opened the scoring after just three minutes before Charles N'Zogbia added a second in first-half injury time.

Mohammed Diame added the third with a deflected shot before DJ Campbell grabbed a late consolation goal.

It was an impressive performance from the Latics who looked anything but a team that were threatened by relegation with their composed passing play.

"It is a massive win for us, but our focus was on the performance because sometimes in these big games, you need to get the three points and that can affect the display," Martinez told Sky Sports.

Performance

"The performance from the players was very good. I don't think there has been a team that kept Blackpool as quiet as we have all season.

"In that respect, we have just carried on with what we have shown in the last eight games, but it's important to win football games and we finally got our reward."

There had been rumours of a rift between Rodallega and Martinez during the week but he quashed those by celebrating with his manager after scoring.

However, the Latics boss was happy with the way the opening goal was created as it was the pressure applied by the Wigan players that forced the Blackpool defenders into a mistake.

Deflected

He added: "It was a great finish but it came down to the hard work that we had done off the ball, we closed Blackpool down very well and then you get these kind of opportunities.

"But even with a two goal lead against Blackpool, you know you have to score three goals to win the game and that is a tribute to how refreshing Blackpool have been this season.

"The goal at the end was a little bit of a disappointment but I couldn't be prouder of the players."
