Wigan boss Steve Bruce is aiming to sign Ghana international goalkeeper Richard Kingson to bolster his squad.
The Latics allowed Carlo Nash to join Everton on transfer deadline day, leaving them with just Chris Kirkland and Mike Pollitt in the first-team picture.
Kingson, who Bruce brought to Birmingham during his time at St Andrews, is a free agent having been released by the Midlands outfit this summer.
And the JJB Stadium boss is planning to hold talks with the goalkeeper in the coming days as he looks to agree a deal.
Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post: "Kingson is the No.1 goalkeeper for Ghana and we're hoping he will join us.
"At the moment he's with Ghana - they're playing in Libya this weekend, so he should be coming to see us next week.
"He hasn't got a club at the moment and we're allowed to bring in out-of-contract players.
"We need three goalkeepers, and make no mistake, if I hadn't got him lined up, I wouldn't have let Nash leave."
