Jason Koumas is a major injury doubt for Wales ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan on Saturday.
Koumas has joined up with John Toshack's squad but is unable to train as he is carrying an ankle problem.
The Wigan playmaker will undergo a rigorous fitness test on Thursday to determine whether he is able to represent his country in their opening game on the road to South Africa.
Toshack admits the outlook on Koumas looks bleak but is refusing to give up hope of being able to call upon the influential midfielder this weekend.
"He won't really be able to train until Thursday and we will have a good look at him then," Toshack told the Western Mail.
"Jason played for 45 minutes against Chelsea, before coming off with the ankle problem. He was not really able to train much at Wigan last week and was an unused substitute for their game against Hull on Saturday.
"The only 90 minutes Jason has had this season was for us against Georgia the other week.
"We are keeping our fingers crossed and we will know more on Thursday. He is an important player for us, though."
