Wigan had to settle for a draw in Germany as their pre-season preparations continued with a 2-2 stalemate against Hannover.
Latics boss Steve Bruce started with new signings Olivier Kapo and Daniel de Ridder following their summer switches from Birmingham City.
Hannover started the brighter as Carlo Nash had to be quick off his line to deny a foray from the home side, but it was Wigan that gained the lead when Emile Heskey took a long ball from Lewis Montrose on his chest before flicking home.
Wigan's advantage proved short-lived though for just two minutes later, in the 19th of an entertaining first half, Hannover levelled through Mike Hanke.
Henri Camara and Kapo both had chances to restore Wigan's lead but found Hannover's goalkeeper in excellent form. It was left to defender Paul Scharner to show them the way to goal when he netted from a set piece.
Scharner struck in the 83rd minute, before undoing his good by conceding a late penalty that Mikael Forsell - a striker that played under Bruce at Birmingham - coolly tucked away.
