Goalkeeper to be rewarded with 12-month extension

Veteran Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt is set to sign a new one-year contract at the JJB Stadium. The 36-year-old, who provides back-up to Latics No.1 Chris Kirkland, is expected to put pen-to-paper on the 12-month extension next week. Pollitt is hoping to see more first-team action next term, but accepts he may have to watch from the sidelines with England hopeful Kirkland impressing manager Steve Bruce. Pollitt told the Manchester Evening News: "I love being at Wigan and I also love being involved within the Premier League. "I'd naturally have liked to have played more games last season, but it wasn't to be yet it's still great to be involved at this level and good to keep working hard."

Fantastic

He added: "I enjoy working every day with Chris Kirkland, we get on very well together. Carlo Nash has returned from Stoke and we enjoy one another's company and keep each other on our toes. "Chris did extremely well in the second half of last season. He really seemed to kick on when Steve Bruce came in. He works very hard and he turned in some fantastic performances, notably against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. "I think he enjoys me pushing him along, he is certainly a top-class keeper and it's just great to be within the set-up. "I think we can look forward to another good season because we certainly look strong and organised as a unit under Steve Bruce."
