Wigan boss Steve Bruce believes Chris Kirkland will make the England No.1 jersey his own if given the opportunity.
Kirkland was widely tipped to become an England regular when he joined Liverpool in 2001, but his progression has been hindered by a series of injuries at key points in his career - including a back spasm ahead of the friendly with France on Wednesday.
And while Bruce admits the 'too brave' Kirkland can bring on the injuries himself, he insists he has exactly what it takes to represent his country long-term.
"You need to get your chance," he told The Sun. "And if Chris does get that chance then I'm absolutely convinced he would make the position his.
"He's got all the ingredients: he's big, he's commanding, he kicks it well and he's brave as a lion - sometimes too brave. He goes for things other people would cringe at.
"And he's daft. He's up there with all the daft goalkeepers. He'll fly at things.
"He just needs to stay clear of the horrible injuries he's had but, when you work with him, you realise just how good he is."
