Wigan manager Steve Bruce has revealed that he is trying to sign Scotland Under 21 striker Ross McCormack from Motherwell.
However, Bruce has denied that the Latics have agreed a pre-contract deal with the player to fight off competition from Middlesbrough.
"That is not quite true," said Bruce.
"We have had negotiations with Motherwell and we have opened discussions.
"We are keen and very interested in the player, but that's the way it is at the moment.
"One thing is for certain is that nothing will be done now."
The former Rangers forward has bagged nine goals in 22 games for Motherwell so far this season - firing his side to fourth in the Scottish Premier League.
Motherwell boss Mark McGhee is keen to sort out a new contract for the youngster - however a move south of the border appears the more likely outcome.
Bruce said: "He is one that we have targeted, we have had a look at, and he is of an interest to us.
"So we will see how it progresses."
