Wigan Athletic boss Steve Bruce has revealed that he was tempted to make a move for Robbie Savage.
Savage, who signed for Derby County from Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, played under Bruce at Birmingham City for three-and-a-half years.
And the now Wigan boss has admitted he considered bringing the 33-year-old midfielder to the JJB Stadium, but was put off by his age.
"There was a little bit of me that was tempted because the one thing Robbie can do is make an impact," Bruce explained in the Daily Star.
"But I decided against it in the end. If he had been 22 instead of 33, maybe I'd have moved for him.
"But I've already got Denny Landzaat, who is 31, and Josip Skoko, who is 32, in midfield.
"I'd rather have a younger one in there instead of another 30-something.
"But I can understand why [Derby manager] Paul Jewell has signed him - Robbie will give everybody a lift.
"That said, I don't think he will ever be the cult hero he was at Birmingham."
Bruce also spoke of the speculation linking Landzaat with a transfer to Holland.
"As of yet there has been no bid. I'm looking to add to the squad rather than weaken it," he concluded.
