Ajax have conceded defeat in their attempts to persuade Wigan Athletic midfielder Denny Landzaat to return to Holland.
Landzaat started his professional career at Ajax before making his name elsewhere prior to joining Wigan in the summer of 2006.
Feyenoord were linked with a bid earlier in the week, but the Holland international admitted he was not keen to return home.
And Ajax's technical director Martin van Geel has now acknowledged the club will have to look elsewhere for January signings.
"At this stage we are reminded of the potential of Ajax, but also of the impossibilities," Van Geel told De Telegraaf.
"Most candidates are simply unattainable, or you are encountering many clubs who are reluctant to sell.
"The only solution for us is to try to be inventive."
