New Wigan boss Steve Bruce is on the look-out for a new left-back - which places Kevin Kilbane under pressure.
The Republic of Ireland international, 30, has filled the berth but new boss Bruce believes it is not his natural position.
Bruce took over at the Premier League strugglers on Monday and has identified the left-back position as an area he needs to strengthen.
He told the Daily Express: "You don't need to be Einstein to work out that we haven't got a left-back.
"Kevin has had to fill in there and he did well against Arsenal last week, but he is not a natural left-back.
"He is just doing a job there."
Bruce takes charge of his first game on Saturday at home to Manchester City as he seeks to propel the Latics away from the relegation zone.
