Wigan Athletic have extended the loan of Ecuador international Luis Valencia for another season at The JJB Stadium.

The midfielder made 22 appearances in the Premier League last term, scoring once, as he impressed during his original loan move from Spanish club Villarreal.

Valencia caught Wigan's eye at last summer's World Cup finals as he was short listed for the Gillette Best Young Player award, and new Latics boss Chris Hutchings hopes the 21-year-old will continue to progress in his second season in England.

"Considering he was in a new country, a long way from home and couldn't speak the language, I thought he adjusted really well in England last season," Hutchings told the club's official website.

"To be fair, he did excellently in certain games and was a valuable member of the squad.

"But, I think he can move up another level this year and become an even more consistent threat.

"Call it South American flair, or a touch of the unexpected, but he combines a really good work ethic with good pace and a bit of quality in areas that can hurt teams."

Valencia will return to The JJB Stadium following the conclusion of his country's Copa America campaign.
