Veteran goalkeeper Mike Pollitt has signed a new one-year contract at Wigan Athletic.

Pollitt has agreed to spend a third season at The JJB Stadium, where he will provide the cover to Chris Kirkland.

He made just five appearances for The Latics last season, and also went on loan to Ipswich and Burnley, but has no qualms in fighting for his place.

"This is a great club to be at, the atmosphere here is as good as any I've been at in my career," Pollitt told the club's official website.

"You expect there to be competition at every club you go and I can genuinely say that we all get on as players.

"Every player wants the chance of Premier League football and I am delighted to be staying."

Wigan boss Chris Hutchings, who has also been targeting another keeper, feels it will be valuable to have Pollitt in the dressing room.

Hutchings said: "It's great to have Polly on board again.

"You need to have more than one quality goalkeeper in the squad and he has proved himself to be a Premiership standard player during his time here.

"He's a great pro, a really valuable member of the squad and a lively character in the dressing room."
