Wigan manager Paul Jewell has challenged summer signing Andy Webster to stay and fight for his place at The JJB Stadium.
Webster made his Latics debut in October after battling to free himself from his contract at Hearts, but has gone on to make just four appearances so far for his new club.
The 24-year-old has failed to break into the first team despite the recent absence of veteran defender Arjan De Zeeuw and says he is ready to head back to Scotland in January.
However, Jewell does not want Webster to leave and feels there is more to come from the Scotland international.
"Andy has come in and found the pace of the Premier League a shock," Jewell said.
"Hopefully he can get back into the team and stay there."
