Wigan midfielder Paul Scharner is facing up to two months on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery.
Scharner had been an ever-present in the Latics side prior to suffering the injury, playing in 17 successive matches.
He returned to Austria for the operation this week and his absence will further stretch Paul Jewell's resources.
"Scharner has had an operation and is going to be out for six to eight weeks, which is a blow for us," Jewell confirmed.
"We haven't the biggest squad in the world, and now we've quite a few injuries."
Jewell signed Swedish centre-back Andreas Granqvist on loan from Helsingborgs on Thursday but he is still planning to delve into the transfer market in January.
He has declared that 'another midfielder and at least one striker' remain on his shopping list.
