Wigan defender Ryan Taylor could be out of action for the rest of the season after fracturing his fifth metatarsal.

Taylor suffered the injury during the 1-1 draw with Leeds in the FA Cup and will be forced to watch the game against Arsenal on Tuesday from the sidelines.

Latics boss Paul Jewell admitted that the loss was a massive setback for the club, but praised the 21-year-old for the part he has played in their Premiership campaign.

"I am really disappointed with the lad as he is progressing really nicely," he remarked.

"He is a terrific kid and it is going to be a blow for us as he is a valuable member of the squad. In the worst case scenario he could be out for the season."

Austrian defender Paul Scharner could be handed his debut in place of Taylor in the Carling Cup clash against The Gunners.
