Wigan Athletic manager Paul Jewell admits he did make an enquiry for West Bromwich Albion striker Robert Earnshaw.
Jewell is looking to pep up his attack before the close of the transfer window after selling Nathan Ellington to The Baggies.
Prior to Ellington's £3 million move to The Hawthorns, there were suggestions Jewell had asked for Earnshaw in exchange.
The Latics chief denied rumours he had floated this option but now concedes he did ask about the prospects of signing Earnshaw.
Baggies boss Bryan Robson rejected the enquiry for the Wales international, leaving Jewell frustrated in his efforts to add firepower to his squad.
Norwich City shunned his request for Dean Ashton and, with Wigan still to open their goals account in The Premiership, attack is an area Jewell is keen to strengthen.
"We were told Dean was not for sale at any price and we were interested in Earnshaw but West Brom did not want to sell," said Jewell.
"But it's not like a knee-jerk reaction just because we haven't scored yet.
"Even before Nathan Ellington left we have been looking to bring someone in."
