Stephen Elliott scored a late equaliser to earn Sunderland a point against Wigan.Substitute Stephen Elliott pegged Championship leaders Wigan back with an equaliser to earn Sunderland a point.
Elliott's crisp finish in the 82nd minute denied Wigan victory after striker Jason Roberts scored his third goal of the season.
Both Wigan strikers had passed fitness tests before the match and Nathan Ellington twice came close with shots from distance before he set up the opener for Roberts, who sidefooted home from close range.
Ellington, with a third long-range effort, winger Gary Teale and midfielder Jimmy Bullard, from 25 yards, almost added to Wigan's lead, while there was little response from Sunderland.
Then Ellington came close with a 30-yard free kick while former Bolton midfielder Per Frandsen shot wide.
Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy brought Elliott on for John Oster and Sunderland improved, with Kevin Kyle volleying over the bar and then heading wide.
Matt Jackson blocked a goalbound Carl Robinson shot before Elliott levelled from 18 yards and, though Ellington had another shot, it was enough to clinch a draw.
