Two sendings off for Wigan Athletic helped West Ham to a fantastic 4-0 win at Upton Park - with Marlon Harewood grabbing two in an impressive debut.

Kevin Horlock had grabbed an early first before Harewood's cut-back led to an own goal from Jason Jarrett which doubled West Ham's advantage.

Matt Jackson and Lee McCulloch were dismissed for The Latics either side of half-time, and Harewood made himself an instant hero with a brace to wrap up the scoring, the first from the penalty spot, and the second a delicious finish 15 minutes from time.

Wigan must have felt it was not be their day when West Ham opened the scoring just minutes in.

Already dominant in the opening exchanges, a lovely move released Brian Deane down the right and his low hard cross was neatly converted by Horlock.

The advantage was soon doubled - with debutant Harewood doing superbly down the right to earn space to cut-back, and midfielder Jarret was unable to prevent himself rolling the ball into the back of his own net.

Geoff Horsfield had already left the pitch injured for The Latics before Paul Jewell's afternoon then got even worse when Jackson was shown a straight red card for diving in two-footed on Hayden Mullins.

Wigan had ten men for just eight more minutes - with the start of the second half seeing McCulloch receive his marching orders for a second yellow card after a cynical pull back on Tomas Repka.

It was party time at Upton Park, and the demoralised visitors soon conceded their third, Jason De Vos bringing down Harewood, and the new-boy allowed to get up and convert from the penalty spot.

Harewood then grabbed his second, and West Ham's fourth when a sublime weighted through-ball by Hayden Mullins allowed the former Nottingham Forest man to canter through and chip the ball over the onrushing John Filan.
