Kit Symons is aiming to convince Fulham's owners to give him the job full-time after being placed in temporary charge following the sacking of Felix Magath.

The Whites are struggling at the bottom of the Championship with just a single point from their first seven games and Magath was axed after their sixth defeat at Nottingham Forest on Wednesday.

Symons has been in charge of Fulham's successful Under-21 set-up for some time but, in his first press conference as caretaker boss, the former Wales international said he has been itching to become a first-team manager.

“I want to convince the owner to give me the job full-time. I've done the caretaker thing a few times and I'm ready to do it full-time now,” he said.

“I've got my own big ideas about what I want to do. I've got full confidence in the way I train, coach and manage and these players are going to love it.

“Quite simply, I want to do the basics well. We'll have an attacking day, a defending day, a transition day and then any time left over for set pieces, other than that there's not too much more to worry about in the game of football.

“The club needs stability now and I am here to give that. No one understands the fabric of the football club better than me. I understand what the fans want, what the people working here want and what the players want now.

“I'm really excited and confident we can start moving up the table. I've spoken to a couple of the players and they're incredibly positive about it too. Hopefully I'll be here a long time.”

Fulham hit an all-time low with Magath in charge, after the German could not prevent them from being relegated from the Premier League last season and lost six of his opening seven Championship games this term.

And Symons, who is also assistant to Wales boss Chris Coleman said: “It's been a difficult time for the club.

"There's no escape from one point from 21. It's not a great return by any stretch. It's been a bit of a whirlwind. I wasn't privy to what happened under Felix but it's in the past now.

“We've certainly got a squad that's a lot better than what our league position says. It's down to me now to pick the right team for the right games and win.”
